Letter To The Struggling Artist
Dearest Artist,
Here's the truth. If you're looking for a career in the arts, especially if you are BIPOC or from an underrepresented group or minority, it will be harder for you than for others. Even though, things are more diverse these days than ever before, there are still so many glass ceilings and hurdles that have to be smashed, before we will ever see true and equitable representation. There are so many factors beyond your control.
So what can you do?
Focus on what you can control and assume full responsibility for those things. Artist, you will have to really develop your resilience, resourcefulness and skills. You're going to have to do far more, if you want to go as far as someone born with a measure of privilege...and it can be a lonely road. We practice vulnerability every day in an industry that asks us to remain receptive and yet resilient in the face of rejection. How do you keep swimming when the tide is so strong that it doesn't feel like you're going anywhere? How do you combat burnout and exhaustion? How do you hold on to the life-raft that is your love for the arts, when the tug of overwhelm threatens to drag you to the bottom?
That's why we're here.
Artists need support and community. All artists!
We encourage each other, make each other better and remind each other that path we are walking is a worthwhile and honourable enough pursuit on its own.
At Re-Present Studios, we can't promise you awards and accolades (though we hope you go as far as your ambitions dare to carry you), but we can promise you a safe, diverse, community of artists, out to learn, grow, challenge and change the future of storytelling.
If you choose to join us, we welcome you with open arms, exactly as you are. Let's see if we can do, in our togetherness, what we were never able to do alone.
For the love of the arts and the hope of a future that has enough space for us all.
Love
The Re-Present Studios Team
